Leon Williams Scholarship Award
Leon Williams is a trailblazer in San Diego’s local government. He was the City of San Diego’s first African American Councilman, and the first and only African American elected to the County Board of Supervisors.
Mr. Williams was an early advocate of implementing needle-exchange programs to combat AIDS, installing freeway call boxes, and pioneering safer smoking laws. Envisioning a safer and equitable future, he called for better community policing efforts, "smart" urban growth, and better transit options.
Leon Williams was also instrumental in the creation of the County of San Diego's Public Defender’s Office and the Southeast Economic Development Corporation.
For 2024, AAACE will award one (1) qualifying high school senior a $500 scholarship for exhibiting excellence in the areas of career preparation, leadership, academics, and community service.
